If you run an online clothing store, some examples of categories might be "Clothes for men", "Women's fashion" and "Items on sale" showing the different products in each section.
Then, if you'd like to get even more specific, you can create an additional subset of subcategories like "Leggings" and list it under "Women's fashion", or "Fitness tracker" under Clothes for Men".
Creating categories and subcategories
Our eCommerce App allows you to create a complex category structure with several levels. Categories of the first level are referred to as root categories. These are the categories your customers see in main navigation. You can also create categories of the second, third, etc. level within your root category. These are referred to as subcategories.
Customers can navigate your categories and subcategories with the help of our eCommerce Categories element.
To get started:
1. Go to your eCommerce App → Catalog → Categories.\ 2. Click Add Root Category:
3. Enter the Name of your category.\ 4. Click Choose file to upload an image for your category. Upload an image that represents your category or an image of a product from the category.\ 5. Enter the description. Either describe what products are in that category, or just leave it blank.\ 6. Click Save.
To create a new subcategory:
1. Go to your eCommerce App → Catalog → Categories.\ 2. Select the category into which you want to add a subcategory from the category tree on the left.\ 3. Click Add Subcategory button:
4. Click Choose file to upload an image for your category.\ 5. Enter the description and save.
Assigning products to categories
To show the products in certain categories, you should assign them to that category. You can assign products to multiple categories at once. For example, an item that belongs to the Shoes category can be on sale and belong to the Sale items category as well.
To assign a product to a category:
1. Go to your eCommerce App → Catalog → Categories.\ 2. Select the category to which you want to assign a product from the category tree on the left.\ 3. Switch to the Category products tab.\ 4. Click Assign Products to Category:
5. Select the necessary items in the list. You can filter the products by SKU and Name.\ 6. Click Add products to add items in bulk or click the Plus icon to assign products one by one.
!Tip: You can also assign products to categories and move them from one category to another when you edit the product.
Sorting products in categories
You can sort the products automatically by date added, by price or by name with the help of the Default Products Sort Order option or set a custom order of products within a category and sort the products manually:
- Go to your eCommerce App → Settings → General → Cart & Checkout.
- Set the Default Products Sort Order option to Defined by store owner:
3. Go to Catalog → Categories and select the category where you want to organize the products in the category tree.\ 4. Switch to the Category products tab and drag and drop the items to change their order:\
**!Note: **The products that were assigned to the deleted category will not be deleted. They will be moved to the Store Front page category.
